The Polar Bear is the largest bear species you'll find on the planet—well, except for the odd Kodiak Brown Bear in Alaska, which can get just as hefty. These Arctic ice-dwellers are built on a serious scale: males tip the scales at around 600kg. They're thought to be cousins of the Brown Bear, though their name actually means "Sea Bear," which makes sense when you clock how much time they spend near the coast and in the water. They're proper swimmers too—capable enough to turn up a hundred miles from the nearest ice or land.
