Beyond the famous sheriffs and marshals you see in every Western, the American frontier had all sorts of law enforcement doing the heavy lifting. Texas Rangers, the North-West Mounted Police — these weren't just keeping the peace. They were out there protecting frontier communities from threats along the borders, whether Indian or Mexican. It's the less glamorous side of frontier law and order that actually kept things running.
