What you're getting
Cobras are famous for that threatening hood at their neck – they spread it out when they feel threatened or angry. The hood's made up of flaps of skin attached to long ribs, which is genuinely clever if you think about it.
They can also lift their heads high off the ground, which isn't just a bit scary – it helps them hunt for food too. Add in the loud hissing they do to scare off predators, and you've got a snake that's learned to make itself as intimidating as possible.
There are 270 different types of cobras and their relatives, including taipans, adders, mambas, and various sea snakes like kraits. They all have short fangs and are extremely venomous.
