All blue gropers start out female. As they grow, they go through a phase where they might be either sex, then develop their adult colours and reach what's called the terminal phase. You'll typically spot just one or two males in any given area, with plenty more females around them. Here's the clever bit: if the dominant male dies, the largest female will grow, change colour, shift sex, and take over as the new dominant male.
